Blues Control

For an album as nimble and diverse as Blues Control’s 2012 release Valley Tangents, it’s surprising that the two-piece husband-wife combo are relying less on samples than ever. On their Drag City Records debut, Blues Control offers up a panache of rock genres—from psych to progressive and industrial to funk-soul—that can oscillate from one to the other on each song; no one tune sounds like the other. Russ Waterhouse hammers out myriad sounds on guitars and synthesizers, while Lea Cho evokes Hornsby or Guaraldi on the keys. For a duo—or for any band, for that matter—the compositions are tight and intriguing. If Valley Tangents is your intro to the erudite musicians, be sure to work backward, especially spending an intimate evening with their third and, arguably their best, album, Local Flavor. Psychic Ills and Follakzoid are also on the bill. The Urban Lounge, 241 S. 500 East, 9 p.m., $10
