Thanks to Bugs Bunny, there is no character in the entire operatic canon as well known, even to those who’ve never attended an opera, than Figaro the barber of Seville. And, thanks to Amadeus, we all know that Wolfgang Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro was somewhat controversial for its comic portrayal of relations between the noble and servant classes.
But there’s knowing about a great work of art, and then there’s actually experiencing it. Utah Opera serves up Mozart’s brilliant score and Pierre Beaumarchais’ story of Figaro (Ryan McKinny), his fiancée Susanna (Jamie-Rose Guarrine), and the various characters whose amorous designs on one another create a hectic farce. Will Figaro and Susanna’s master, Count Almaviva (Philip Cutlip), come between them? With the Utah Symphony accompanying the performance, the answer will surely be breathtaking. (Scott Renshaw)
