Babe may have convinced you that sheep-herding championships were the stuff of storybook lands far away. But England’s International Sheepdog News called Utah’s own Soldier Hollow Classic “the foremost trial in the world”—and in 2009, more than 24,000 spectators saw why.
The Heber Valley venue once again hosts the Labor Day weekend tradition, with 42 competitors from around the world and every continent bringing their companions for a chance to round up the sheep and earn top-dog honors during Monday’s Grand Championship. And that’s only part of the fun during an event that will also include performances by puppeteer Mally Lewis with her mother Shari Lewis’ beloved pal Lamb Chop; the Bow Wow Luau Acrobatic Dog Show; Splash Dog dock-jumping competition; and plentiful food, crafts, music and kids’ activities. Leave your own pets at home; this one is for other canines to show off their unique talents.
