Homeless Civil Rights

There’s a move afoot to organize an advocacy center dedicated solely to protecting the rights of Utah’s poor and homeless.---
Recently critics have alleged, more and more laws, and proposed laws, seek to criminalized the poor. Now some of the plaintiffs in an ongoing panhandling case are hoping to organize momentum behind the creation of a homeless rights advocacy group, to advocate for sensible compassionate solutions to homeless issues.
“Utah has homeless service providers and a few advocates for low income housing but there has never really been an organization here that is devoted to advocacy on homeless issues,” writes Bill Tibbits, Anti-Hunger Advocacy Project Coordinator of the Crossroads Urban Center. Tibbits says the idea was really driven by the desire from homeless individuals to try and pool ideas and advocate for homeless issues by drawing on models that have worked in other cities and bringing them to Utah.
While the idea is still being developed, Tibbits says more finalized plans will be announced at the center’s Poverty Summit on August 21.
“Crossroads Urban Center's goal in helping to launch this project is to create an organization led by homeless people that can help draw attention to issues facing homeless people,” Tibbits writes.
