Zy is Fly
Culinary Institute of America-trained chef Matthew Lake—who cites Alice Waters, Wolfgang Puck, Larry Forgione, Jeremiah Tower and Jasper White as “idols”—has teamed up with local entrepreneur Sean Slatter to open Zy, a “food, wine and cheese” eatery located at 268 S. State in Salt Lake City. Designed by architectural firm EDA, Zy features windows that look into an exhibition kitchen, hardwood floors, atrium seating and furnishings made by local craftsmen—a very fly restaurant combining classic and contemporary design elements. Entree selections include wild mushroom & spinach enchiladas; pan-roasted Pacific cod with mussels, clams and chorizo; shrimp a la plancha; duck breast Peking-style; and lamb loin with basil crust. There is also a nice array of a dozen or so cheeses to choose from. And, I like that all of the wines on the wine list are available either by the glass or bottle. For reservations, phone 801-779-4730 or visit ZyRestaurant.com.

Dine O’Round Is Back
The Salt Lake City Downtown Alliance’ Fall Dine O’Round is in full swing and continues through Oct. 1, 2011. As always, this is an ideal way to explore Salt Lake City restaurants at prices that are easy on the wallet. Forty-three local restaurants are participating in the event, now in its ninth year. Zy, Rio Grande Cafe, Bocata, Hapa Taqueria, Maxwell’s East Coast Eatery, Dojo Asian Inspired Cuisine & Lounge, Washington Square Cafe, Stoneground, Thaifoon Taste of Asia and Inferno Cantina are new participants this year. In addition to their regular menus, 40 restaurants are offering a three-course dinner for $15 or $30 per person, while 29 restaurants feature a two-item lunch for $5 or $10.

“Dine O’Round is a favorite tradition. For many of us, changing autumn leaves means cooler temperatures, back to school and new dining adventures in Utah’s capital city,” says Jason Mathis, executive director of the Downtown Alliance.

For additional information and a complete listing of participating restaurants, visit DowntownSLC.org.
