This week, check out the vision for the valley’s beloved old drag—State Street. The city’s venerable central thoroughfare could use a little love, and county planners could use your advice. Later this weekend, consider carousing for a good cause at the Cystic Fibrosis Summer Benefit Bash. Anxious to bite into the next legislative session? Then don’t miss summer training that includes a lobbying presentation by the legislative go-to guy for the Utah League of Cities and Towns, Lincoln Shurtz.

Life on State Public Workshop
Thursday, July 9
It’s hard to put a finger on who’s got a stake in a certain issue, especially when that certain issue is a road that crosses multiple cities, communities and jurisdictions. Somebody’s got to figure out the vision for this street. If you give a damn, that person might as well be you. Murray High School, 5440 S. State, July 9, 6 p.m., LifeOnState.org

Cystic Fibrosis Summer Benefit Bash
Friday & Saturday, July 10 & 11

Time to put those partying skills to good use: For a $6 cover, you can raise money for cystic fibrosis research and take part in a hell of a summer bash that includes $3 Wasatch Summerbrau beer specials and a $20 three-course meal at the Skybar, on top of the Red Lion Hotel. Eat, drink and battle cystic fibrosis. Red Lion Hotel, 161 W. 600 South, July 10-11, 7 p.m.-2 a.m., 1-800-733- 5466, CFF.org

The Art of Lobbying at the State Legislature
Sunday, July 12

Lobbyists at one point in history weren’t always reptiles in $1,500 suits, leaving a slime trail around Capitol Hill for everyone to slip on. In fact, even today, some aren’t all that bad. For anyone interested in becoming a “citizen lobbyist”—the antithesis of their democracy-subverting cousins—this event is for you. Lincoln Shurtz, with the Utah League of Cities and Towns, will explain to beginners the art of lobbying as well as the value of lobbyists and their role in government. First Unitarian Church of Salt Lake City, 569 S. 1300 East, July 12, 10 a.m., 801-582-7783, jmg@csolutions.net
