ALEC has invaded Salt Lake City, and if you’re interested in learning more about the shadowy reach of this corporate-driven legislating machine, then you can check out a forum on ALEC’s influence on military spending. Later, you can join the anti-ALEC bike swarm that will be converging outside the ALEC conference. Or, for something completely different, on the weekend you can enjoy opera in Logan to benefit a local animal shelter.

ALEC, Debt & Militarism
Friday, July 27

Join Veterans for Peace organizer Aaron Davis as he gives a crash-course explanation on the influence of ALEC’s corporate sponsors and how the legislation they sponsor feeds the United States’ military and defense spending—and also our ever-expanding national debt.

ALEC Critical Mass Bike Swarm
Friday, July 27

ALEC may be like a meat-market mixer for corporate interests looking to hook up with lawmakers to pass their business-friendly legislation, but that doesn’t mean average folks can’t crash the party. If you’ve got two wheels and some righteous indignation, you can join the Critical Mass Bike Swarm outside the Grand America Hotel where the conference is being held and help protest the conference by disrupting the conference-goers and their special-interest love fest.
Meet at Gallivan Center, 239 S. Main; ride to Grand America Hotel, 555 S. Main, July 27, 5:30 p.m., OccupySLC.org

Musical Paws Benefit Concert
Sunday, July 29

If you’re a fan of adorable puppies, cuddly kittens and opera, then the fifth-annual Musical Paws Benefit Concert just might be the cause for you. On Sunday, you can watch the Utah Festival Opera perform operatic classics in Logan, all for the benefit of the Four Paws Rescue, a nonprofit animal-rescue organization serving the Cache Valley area. Donations are gladly accepted.
St. Johns Episcopal Church, 85 E. 100 North, 435-752-3534, July 29, 7 p.m., 4Paws.Petfinder.org, UFOC.org
