Utah Symphony: Disney in Concert

Friday July 23

In this Disney-themed concert, the Utah Symphony, like Pocahontas, will “paint with all the colors of the wind”—or, rather, woodwinds, along with brass, strings and such. The symphony, tonight led by Pops conductor Jerry Steichen, will offer a lighthearted family evening, leaving their masterworks back at Abravanel Hall. Instead, they’ll opt for the tunes that American kids are raised on.

After 2009’s exciting Peter and the Wolf, tykes and grown-ups alike will enjoy medleys and overtures, in rapid-fire succession, showcasing music from Disney movies, including The Little Mermaid, The Lion King, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Mary Poppins—a jam-packed, two-hour event. The bouncing groove and scattin’ of The Jungle Book’s “I Wanna Be Like You” will be memorable for both “man-cubs” and the “king(s) of the swingers.” And, while there’s only one scheduled sing-along—the Mary Poppins medley—expect an impromptu cacophony of young voices from the grassy slopes of the Snow Park Outdoor Amphitheater.

The Deer Valley Music Festival is bringing an assortment of guest artists from Ben Folds to Randy Travis, offering up fun, approachable orchestral arrangements. Utah Symphony’s child-friendly performances—including at least one yearly at Deer Valley—give young listeners early exposure to symphonic arrangements, and for the minimal youth ticket price, they can’t be missed.

Disney in Concert @ Deer Valley Music Festival, Snow Park Amphitheater, 2250 Deer Valley Drive South, Park City, July 23, 7:30 p.m., $15-$50, family pass $40. DeerValleyMusicFestival.org
