When you’re the nation’s only completely free professional theater company, you could be excused for presenting undemanding, familiar works to build your audience. Utah Contemporary Theatre instead chooses to continue its experiment with a world premiere by a promising young playwright.
Ian August’s Donna Orbits the Moon casts Kathryn Atwood in a one-woman show about the titular Donna, a happily married woman with grown children and bake-sale prizes—and, as the play unfolds, a confusing onrush of emotions that has her losing touch with the very ground beneath her feet. Though tickets are free, you can reserve them either by phone or online at the company’s Website—and with free entertainment this compelling available, you never know if you’re going to need to beat the rush.
