Trying Try-Angles
The gay bar Club Try-Angles (251 W. 900 South), known for the “coldest, cheapest and biggest drafts” in town, is also a great place for karaoke on Thursdays and Sundays. It also has a well-attended pool tourney on Wednesdays. In a move we haven’t seen anywhere else in town, the bar has installed a text-messaging system that patrons use to flirt with each other in an anonymous or public way via screens throughout the bar. This can help break down the barrier between those who are shy and open up fun new possibilities for those more bold. Check out a restaurant and lounge in the same parking lot, Off Trax Cafe (an affiliate of the club), for after-hours action on Friday and Saturday if you need some time to sober up or extend your playtime after Try-Angles closes.

The Republican: Four Months to Saint Patrick’s Day
Nov. 19 marks four months until Saint Patrick’s Day, but that doesn’t have to be the only reason you visit what some call the only “real” Irish pub in town on an upcoming Saturday. The Republican (917 S. State) is big on broadcasting all football matches (yes, football as the rest of the world knows it, or what you might call “soccer”) and big on Guinness drafts—just like you like them.

The Hotel: Opium Lounge
Opium tar is dirty and unrefined, but with a little processing you get a nice, white product that is pleasing to the eye. The same can be said with The Opium Lounge inside of The Hotel (155 W. 200 South). It’s a pristine white contrast to the dark walls of the rest of the venue. Hookahs, mixed drinks and a clear connection with the super-close DJ make it one of the more fun rooms in town to lounge in.
