City Weekly is asking locals what’s playing on their iPods and assorted digital toys'brand-new tunes, classic favorites, etc.'right now, and why. Coincidentally, X96 DJ Corey O’Brien (weeknights, 7 p.m.-midnight) is launching a new show feature Monday, Aug. 15: “There’s a lot of great stuff out now, so I’m starting O’Brien Public Radio, or O.P.R. ... a full hour of new music.” And maybe some of these tracks from O’Brien’s iPod:

nn

Magneta Lane, “Constant Lover”

nn

(2004, PaperBagRecords.com)

nn

“Canadian trio; the celeb math goes: Coldplay Veruca Salt The Strokes your ex-girlfriend = Magneta Lane. Hail Canada!”

nn

Sons & Daughters, “Dance Me In”

nn

(2005, DominoRecordCo.com)

nn

“Franz Ferdinand got their start on Domino Records. Sons & Daughters have the same spark that makes you crave the forbidden dance.”

nn

The White Stripes, “Forever for Her (Is Over for Me)”

nn

(2005, V2Music.com)

nn

“This song makes me long for love, but not commitment. I weep.”

nn

Morningwood, “Nu Rock”

nn

(2005, MorningwoodRocks.com)

nn

“The Yeah Yeah Yeahs promised rioting and anarchy. I feel the same warm and fuzzies when Chantal Claret sings, ‘Come on, get over it! Come on, get into it!’”

nn

The Paper Chase, “Ready, Willing, Cain & Abel”

nn

(2005, KillRockStars.com)

nn

“This band had the best album of last year. Music so thick in waves you could surf on it'but it would kill you. AFI and NIN ‘Only’ ‘Wish’ they were this band. Ha! NIN puns.”

nn

Mando Diao, “Annie’s Angle”

nn

(2005, Mute.com)

nn

“These Swedes will teach you rock & roll in such a pure form you could snort it.”

nn

Alkaline Trio, “Mercy Me”

nn

(2005, Vagrant.com)

nn

“This song makes you cool'like listening to O’Brien Public Radio, coming soon to X96, Monday nights at 11 p.m.” [Shameless plug noted]

nn

The Refreshments, “Girly”

nn

(1996, TheRefreshments.com)

nn

“I have been through six copies of Fizzy Fuzzy Big & Buzzy. People steal it, it gets overused and I have lost it on numerous road trips. Abusive women are fun and this song proves it.”

nn

Fischerspooner, “Never Win”

nn

(2005, Fischerspooner.com)

nn

“Would you folks please start requesting this song? Request it and we will play it. It really, really works. I promise. It worked for ‘Coin-Operated Boy’ by the Dresden Dolls.”

nn

Louis XIV, “Pledge of Allegiance”

nn

(2005, LouisXIV.net)

nn

“They will rock you like sexual white chocolate. The cheap kind.”
