Give Tom Arnold a break. If your claim to fame is that you’re Roseanne Barr’s ex-husband, you may as well milk whatever camera time you can get. Who would guess that Arnold’s been able to ride that money train for almost 25 years? Somehow, he caught Barr’s eye back in the 1980s and has managed to stay in show business with amazing regularity ever since. Though he’s still heavily involved in movies and TV, he’s taking some time to go back to the comedy clubs where he first got his start. Arnold is truly the king of foot-in-your-mouth shtick; his nervous fidgeting and overall dorky appearance perfectly matches his self-deprecating punchlines.
Whether he’s getting himself nearly killed by professional football players on The Best Damn Sports Show Period or stumbling over himself to apologize for making fun of David Letterman’s age on The Late Show, he leaves people laughing at him as much as with him. But don’t be fooled: Arnold is incredibly savvy.
He’s managed to land lucrative gigs over the past two decades, hosting successful television shows, appearing in blockbuster movies, providing the voice for the Arby’s mitt in television ads—and he’ll be appearing in seven movies in 2009 alone.
Arnold has also been a producer and writer for many television shows and movies. He’s stated that, after you go to one of his performances, you’ll leave feeling better about your own life. And, at the end of the day, Arnold is having the last laugh.
