Congress recently passed a bill extending unemployment benefits for another 13 weeks nationwide. While the bill in Utah may help more than 12,000 unemployed in the state, Republican congressmen Chris Cannon and Rob Bishop voted against the bill, agreeing with President George W. Bush that the bill was overbroad and might encourage unemployment. City Weekly asked Meara McClenahan, a salesperson at the Capitol Theatre box office, if the bill was unnecessary.
“I live downtown and I’ve never had trouble getting a job that pays $8- to $10 an hour. For me, I don’t need an extra 13 weeks of unemployment. But, if I was in a different situation, if I had family and kids and had to support someone other than myself, I think I’d be all for it.”
