nThe Legislature is planning on revamping its ethics committee for next session with a mandate to direct ethics legislation and to staff it equally with Republicans and Democrats. Critics say, however, that an independent committee—not filled with legislators—is what’s really needed. City Weekly asked Alicia Noland, a barista for Rimini Coffee, if she thought an independent committee was necessary:n

I don’t want to be negative, but it’s hard to say these people have the best ethics in the city and choose the correct laws for everybody in the city. I think it’s important to have an [independent committee]. It’s a noble goal for sure; I just can’t say that it will do a whole lot of good. But it’s better than just having legislators.
