The Girl on the Train
Thriller
Sometimes the most frustrating films are the ones where you can see the faint glimmer of the much better film it could have been. Writer/director Larry Brand begins with a vintage film noir premise: Documentary filmmaker Danny Hart (Henry Ian Cusick) becomes fascinated with a mysterious woman named Lexi (Nicky Aycox), and then gets pulled into spying on another man for her. Brand plays with some solid ideas about the appeal of stories that may or may not be true, built on Danny’s film project interviewing a Holocaust survivor. But the main plot is flattened by the confluence of Aycox’s limp performance in the crucial femme fatale role and a framing narrative involving Danny’s interrogation by a police detective (Stephen Lang) that pulls away from any momentum the central story begins to build. It never quite achieves its attempt to reach beyond basic genre satisfactions, then can’t even manage to nail those basic genre satisfactions.
