Adventure, Science Fiction, Thriller
In case you’re concerned you won’t recognize the dystopiapocalypse when you see it, fear not: There will be a teen romantic triangle to show you the way. And in the case of this adaptation of Rick Yancey’s novel—about a multi-phase alien invasion of earth, and the high-school girl named Cassie (Chlöe Grace Moretz) struggling to survive it—the decision to stick with that formula proves nearly crippling. A trio of screenwriters zip through the initial stages of human civilization’s collapse, all so we can reach the point where Cassie is under the care of hunky Evan (Alex Roe). But the narrative also splits from Cassie’s mission to find her lost younger brother to focus on Ben (Nick Robinson)—Cassie’s high-school crush—as he trains with other kids under an army colonel (Liev Schreiber) to help repel the invaders. Sibling reunion clearly isn’t a sexy enough emotional pull, so we’re left with a fragmented, silly science-fiction yarn where no technologically-advanced extra-terrestrial force can withstand the power of raging hormones.
