FAIRPARK—The world’s top action sports athletes put wheels to pavement for the first time in Salt Lake City on Thursday, kicking off the 30th anniversary edition of the X Games that are set to get underway at the Utah State Fairpark this weekend.

Official competition begins Friday with the Women’s Skateboard Park Final at 2 p.m., and will continue Saturday and Sunday with other skateboarding, BMX and Moto X events.

During a news conference on Thursday, X Games CEO Jeremy Bloom said more than 30,000 tickets have been sold for what will be the first X Games held in Salt Lake City.

“This is a really incredible and unique opportunity for this community to see the world’s best athletes, ” Bloom said.

Bloom laid out high expectations for the event, which will pay tribute to the past three decades, with appearances by icons like Tony Hawk and Travis Pastrana and the competitive return of Ryan Sheckler after eight years away from the sport.

“The excitement is at an all-time high here,” Bloom said.

More than 100 athletes are slated to compete this weekend, with 27 of them still in their teens. Around 71% of the athletes were born after the first X Games held in 1995, officials said.

The final round of each competition will be broadcast live on ABC, ESPN, YouTube and xgames.com. ESPN’s flagship highlight show, SportsCenter, will be on set live at the X Games for the first time in several years as well.

Had to be SLC
More than 35 cities around the world bid to host the X Games for 2025. But for Bloom—a former world champion who skied in the 2002 Olympics—the choice was clear.

“I’ve competed here. I know how Utah shows up for big sporting events. The city is no stranger to big events,” Bloom said.

Bloom added that Salt Lake is “an iconic sports town” and the amount of ticket sales thus far is evidence of that fact. In Bloom’s opinion, Salt Lake City is ready for this moment.

“[SLC] has treated us like the Super Bowl is coming to town,” Bloom said.

The weekend is jam-packed with events, including live music performances from deadmau5 and Sublime outside of the competition schedule.

Friday kicks off at 2 p.m. with the Women’s Skateboard Park final before transitioning to BMX Street and Dirt at 3:45 p.m. and 4:45 p.m. Men’s Skateboard Vert and Moto X Best Trick close the day’s competition at 6:30 p.m. and 7:45 p.m. respectively. Saturday is a marathon, starting with Men’s BMX Park at 10:30 a.m. and riding forward until Moto X Best Whip at 7:30 pm.

Must-See Talent
While this X Games will be a celebration of extreme sports’ past, there will be plenty of opportunities to make history this weekend.

Nyjah Huston, a 15-time X Games gold medalist, could become the most-medaled athlete in X Games history with a pair of golds this weekend. Huston is currently tied with Shaun White in second place behind BMX athlete Garrett Reynolds, who holds 16 golds.

After claiming the most skateboarding gold medals at X Games Ventura 2024, it could be a historic weekend for the legendary street skateboarder.

“The crew out there is pretty stacked so it will definitely not be easy,” Huston said. “But any gold, even a podium at this point, I don’t take it for granted.”

As Huston competes for history, a new generation of skaters is taking center stage, and most of them aren’t old enough to drive.

The next gen is led by Arisa Trew, a 15-year-old Australian breakout star who has earned five gold medals through her first 2 years of competition. Trew will defend her title in skateboard park and vert after taking home two golds at X Games Osaka last week.

Trew also took home the gold for women’s park skateboarding at the 2024 Olympics in Paris. If she wins gold in her three disciplines this weekend, she’d tie Lindsey Jacobellis for the most X Games golds for a woman—as a 15-year old.

Trew’s rising star is only rivaled by 16-year-old Gui Khury, a Brazilian vert specialist who, like Trew, took home two gold medals in Osaka.

“Everything feels like a dream,” Khury said. “This is really special to me, and it’s always an honor to be [at the X games].”

BMX Innovator Ryan Williams said he’s planning some never-before-seen tricks for the weekend, teasing his upcoming attempt at the first ever triple backflip in BMX Dirt. Williams claimed the gold for Best Trick BMX Park in Osaka.

X Games 2025 also marks the return of Colby Raha to a gas-powered bike, as he attempts to break his high air record of 56’3”. Raha narrowly missed out on gold in Ventura last year, but said he won’t let the altitude in Salt Lake City impact his performance.

“You just gotta turn that ‘care’ switch off in your brain and really send it,” Raha said.

Raha broke the record for longest dirt bike jump with a flat ground landing last week in Palm Springs, Calif., clearing 23 BMWs. After he competes on Sunday, he said he’ll head straight to Sturgis Bike Rally to attempt the longest ever jump on a Harley Davidson motorcycle.
