On Wednesday, Feb. 25, the world’s Roman Catholics commemorated Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the pre-Easter season of repentance called Lent. Historically, “Mardi Gras” (French for “Fat Tuesday”) was about one last day of debauchery before everyone was supposed to settle down for 40 days of asceticism. Now, it’s pretty much an excuse for a party.
For the Utah Arts Festival, it’s also an excuse for a fund-raiser. The sixth annual Tardy Mardi Party gathers supporters of the local arts for an evening of music, food and even a Texas Hold’Em tournament. If you’ve already postponed your time of contemplation for a few extra days, you might as well support Utah’s grandest arts showcase while you’re doing it. (Scott Renshaw)
