This week, take a plunge into civic engagement and local community building. On Thursday, learn how to make your voice heard on the Hill by taking a crash course in being a citizen lobbyist. This weekend, take a literal plunge into a freezing lake to benefit the Utah Special Olympics, and later, check out a gift show and donation drive to help Utah’s homeless.

Green Lobby Night

Help curb the anti-environmental hot air churned out by the Legislature this session by learning how to become a citizen lobbyist at a special training workshop presented by the Utah Rivers Council, the Utah Sierra Club and HEAL Utah. The free workshop will discuss tips and tricks for citizen advocates who want to lobby lawmakers on the Hill. Utah Capitol, 350 N. State, 801-486-4776, Feb. 7, 6-7:30 p.m., UtahRivers.org

Polar Plunge for Special Olympics
Saturday, Feb. 9

If you’re the kind of Utahn who fears no cold and wears shorts in February, this challenge may be for you. Adults pay $50 and students $35 to jump into a freezing lake, with proceeds going to benefit athletes of the Utah Special Olympics. Six locations across Utah, Feb. 9-23. Visit SOUT.org/SOUT-org-PolarPlunge for complete information and registration.

Baby, It’s Still Cold Outside
Saturday, Feb. 9

If you’re the kind of Utahn who can’t stand the cold, then check out a clothing drive and Valentine gift show to benefit The Road Home shelter. The Utah Olympic Oval and TD Gift Solutions encourage participants to donate blankets, pillows, towels and hygiene items to help comfort and warm Utah’s homeless population. The free event features 120 vendors, a cooking demo, raffles and more. Utah Olympic Oval, 5662 S. Cougar Lane, Kearns, 877-999-7237, Feb. 9, noon-5 p.m., Dynamic-Boutique-Events.com
