After a cartographic snafu reveals that a small section of Canada actually belongs to Vermont, a team of disgraced state troopers is brought back together to aid in the transition; the syrup and hockey jokes fall like rain. It’s been 17 years since the Broken Lizard comedy team’s endearingly shambling Super Troopers took up a permanent spot on weekend cable, with dedicated fans eventually turning to an Indiegogo campaign to seal the deal for a sequel. Even with that backstory, though, the results feel strangely like a contractually obligated rush job, with copious amounts of dead air. (The jokes that do work are mainly just reframed bits from the original, which is no way to run a railroad.) While the lived-in chemistry between the performers still produces a number of random guffaws—Brian Cox doing a split-second Anthony Hopkins-as-Hannibal impression may in itself be worth a rental—this bummer of a follow-up rarely rises above the lower levels of munchie-assisted nostalgia. When an amped-to-the-moon preview audience makes more noise at the set-up of a movie’s gags instead of the punchlines, something is definitely screwy.
