Summer Guide 2011

Make it an amazing summer

Utah’s unbearable hotness of being comes in many forms, the least of which is the Beehive’s actual temps that sizzle in the high 80s during June, July and August.

With five national parks and numerous world-class resorts, Utah is also a hot spot for outdoor peak experiences. To that end, we asked a number of folks for their recipe for the perfect day (see “Top This”) and learned that while the outdoors may be involved—eating, drinking and being lazy are the key ingredients.

For those less lazy, round up your rock pick, slather on the sunscreen and head out in search of Utah rocks and minerals. Our guide to “Hidden Treasures” tells you where to go and what to look for. If you decide to spend the night while in search of the elusive trilobite, “Camping for Beginners” will help you pitch a tent without pitching a fit.

The city is practically fat with premier concert, performance and festival offerings, compiled in these pages. But should you need a change of scenery, consider riding the rails to a burg you may not be as familiar with: “Ogling Ogden” is a sampler of what our northern neighbor has up its sleeves—er, tank top—for summer. Or, instead of traveling by rails, explore the many trails of the Jordan River Parkway on your own “River Ride.

It will likely get unbearably hot in the months ahead. But use City Weekly’s 2011 Summer Guide as an oven mitt and turn up the heat. You may find you like it hot.
