People deal with conflict in various ways. For some, nothing short of a switchblade will do. For others, reflective listening and the use of a mediator are essential tools. And then there’s comedian Spencer King, who thinks tickling people’s funny bone is the best strategy.

Growing up Mormon in Baptist-country Texas, King learned early on that he was better at using humor rather than his fists to diffuse rough situations. King will wield his comedic skills at Wiseguys’ Trolley Square location. He has been featured in various comedy festivals across the country, including The Seattle International Comedy Competition and the North Carolina Comedy Arts Festival.

King’s comedy has been described as “pleasantly irreverent” which, incidentally, is the title of his comedy CD. On his Website, SpencerKingComedian.com, you can see King’s Top 5 Local Newscaster Crushes, a list of odd Google searches he has compiled, the five most annoying things to eat when you have braces and his Mother’s Day list of horrible moms. Also on the Website is video of King’s standup, which provides a taste of his act. With funny bits like the friend nicknamed Bambi because his mother was shot, building a house instead of a memorial for the homeless, Osama bin Laden’s childhood skill at hide-and-seek, frustrations at being confused with the Verizon guy, or ugly people making out, King offers a wide array of irreverent comedy gold. Tickets are $10.

Spencer King @ Wiseguys, Trolley Square, 505 S. 600 East, 801-532-5233, Friday-Saturday, July 17-18, 8 & 10 p.m. WiseguysComedy.com
