Ogden’s Sonora Grill celebrated its third anniversary at the end of March and is kicking things up a notch with cooking classes, a Cinco de Mayo celebration, contests, a special dinner series and more. Among the attractions at Sonora are the new Tour of Mexico dinner series, with menus created from different regions of Mexico. Each dinner will feature five to seven courses for $32 per person. A monthly Ceviche Night featuring “crazy fresh” seafood flown in will be added to the restaurant’s other popular specials, such as Taco Tuesdays, when tacos are $1.50 all day long. And cooking classes are also under way, and they’re the cheapest date around, at the bargain-basement price of $7 per person, including “more food than you can eat.” For more information on the events at Sonora Grill, visit

Africa in Sugar House
A new restaurant featuring Nigerian and West African cuisine and catering has opened in Sugar House. It’s called Edo Kitchen and it’s located at 815 E. 2100 South. Featured dishes include okra, ogbono soup, egushi soup, jollof rice, shrimp fried rice, goat pepper soup, plantains, gari, edikanikon fufu (pounded yam) whole fried fish, goat stew and assorted other menu items. So far, I’ve only seen photos of some of the food, but it sure looks tempting! For reservations and information, call 801-466-3465.

Shakey Ground
Remember Shakey’s Pizza Parlors—the places that featured ragtime music and a kitschy Americana atmosphere? Shakey’s was one of my favorite places to eat as a kid. Well, they’re back. Shakey’s opens in American Fork at The Meadows Shopping Center (496 N. 900 West) on April 27 featuring pizza, pasta, salads, root beer floats and Shakey’s signature Mojo potatoes. Ah, nostalgia … Shakey’s has also partnered with Pony Express Days Community Hero, a program that annually honors children with special needs. On April 28, Shakey’s will host a fundraiser for the Eagle Mountain City’s Community Hero Award, donating a percentage of all food and beverage revenue to the 2011 award recipients. The award winners will be announced during Eagle Mountain City’s Pony Express Days in May.
