Members of the SLC Photo Club, founded in 2004, realize that photography isn’t just about pointing a camera at things; it’s a way of looking at the world. So, they don’t meet just to share images and talk about techniques, but rather, they take photo hikes and trek to different places to share the experience of seeing. The spirit of a group quest is evident when they mount their annual group show.
But they also challenge one another to create arresting images, and the best of their work from 2010 is here on display. Periodically during the year, the group hosts themed shows, but this exhibit essays the array of styles and subject matter of a dozen of the group’s 30 or so members.
Club founder Renee Keith and her husband, Todd, were recently married in Italy, and captured lush photographs of Italian scenery and culture (Renee’s “Angel Feet” is pictured). Brian Jaworski’s favorite artistic subjects are birds of prey. Derek Dyer is known for his portraits augmented with unusual adornments like neon. At 19 years old, Eagle Scout Ryan Sandberg combines photography with an interest in geocaching.
These photographers don’t just stick to what they know, but take on subject matter with different techniques to make the moment the shutter clicks as though the viewer were seeing something for the first time. This is the place to see where the photographic art is moving among local practitioners.
