Skiers and boarders often live for apres-ski, the ritualistic drinking (and eating) after a ski day. But there’s nary a discussion of pre-ski — the typical mountain-bound, grab-and-go granola bar or greasy-spoon meal.

It’s a delicate balance. You want a quick bite, packing away enough caloric, no-stopping potential when there are fresh snow lines to track, and a full-on greasefest will make you crash hard (if you can even move afterward).

One cafe en route from downtown to the Cottonwood Canyons nails pre-ski. Sharon’s Cafe has been serving skiers and the Holladay community for more than six years. Be forewarned: This isn’t your typical diner fare, but this is wholesome, feel-good comfort food.

Sharon’s is a family affair and a labor of love. “It’s not for the money. I love to cook, and I love the people. It’s a good feeling to make people happy,” says owner Sharon Prescott, who often works with her husband and two daughters. Prescott wears a smile and an apron at the front counter almost every day—including the day she was married in the cafe five years ago. Her clan of coffee slingers welcomes everyone into the homey establishment.

The menu includes typical breakfast fare, such as omelets, French toast or pancakes, but also features dishes like the pork tenderloin or sirloin steak and eggs on top of a bowl of oatmeal. Also, the Greek omelet with fried tomatoes is exceptional, especially with sweet potato home fries. “My favorite is the stuffed biscuit and eggs, smothered in country gravy. And, I make one helluva peach cobbler,” says Prescott.

Whatever your fancy — lunch for breakfast, breakfast for lunch — you’ll find something to soothe your grumbling stomach.

Sharon’s is open until 3 p.m. daily, so eat there pre-ski or ditch the slopes completely—which might just be worth it.
