Once again, more than a dozen 10-story-high hot-air balloons will overtake south valley skies like rainbow-colored, low-lying cumulus clouds for the fourth annual Sandy City Balloon Festival.
Enthusiasts and curious spectators are welcome on Friday and Saturday mornings to watch balloons come to life—with teams unfolding, filling, launching balloons—at the sunrise launch, 6:30-8:30 a.m. at Storm Mountain Park. Pilots will answer questions about how the behemoths buoy and boogie. During Saturday evening’s glow launch, 8-10 p.m., balloons fire up burners and fly from the South Towne Promenade, illuminating the night sky. There’ll also be music from Cold Creek, along with food and entertainment.
Pilots and patrons might end the weekend festivities in style. Dating back to ballooning’s early days, pilots generally offer (and help consume) a bottle of Champagne upon landing.
