To many, modern classical music is either an outright contradiction in terms or too much of a riddle to even begin to wrestle with. Utah’s own Salty Crickets Composers Collective (SC3) is a performance group hellbent on unraveling this frequently off-putting conundrum.

SC3 member Crystal Young-Otterstrom says that the group not only fills a unique niche of supplying new, vibrant classical-inspired modern works (“‘classical’ being a loose appellation, of course!”) but also specifically performs the works of composers currently living in within the state of Utah. “Composers in other cities have so many more options than we do,” explains Young-Otterstrom. “We felt it necessary to create a ‘room of our own,’ so to speak. Salt Lake is all about local, vibrant art; there’s a fantastic visual-arts scene here; we’re helping to enrich the current options for music.”

With a wide spectrum of composers living here, it is hard to pin down what to expect from a SC3 performance—the various styles slated for their upcoming Cantillations performance ranges from the operatic to Broadway-esque, swinging out wide to the edges of experimentation. According to Young-Otterstrom, the best expectation is to not expect anything at all. “We embody so many styles, we are interested in so many different types of experimentation and non-experimentation, that you’re likely to experience practically everything at our performances.

At Cantillations, expect to hear both the voice and piano used in ways that you’ve never heard before. It’s going to rock.”
