In its third and final performance of the 2010 season, the Salty Cricket Composers Collective—a group that focuses solely on local composition—brings you a re-imagining of the string quartet. Instead of the standard two violins, violist and a cello, SC3’s Green Cello: Rated PG for Language and Low Violins contains two violists, two cellists and some vocalists thrown in here and there for good measure.

Featuring members of the Utah Symphony—including principle violist Brant Bayless, cellist Walter Haman and frequent substitute violist Leslie Richards—Green Cello will include new and exciting works by composers Christian Asplund, Kagan Breitenbach, Joseph Calkins, Rebeca Dawn, Gary Gerber, Igor Iachimciuc, George T. Marie, John Newman, Scott Wasilewski and Crystal Young-Otterstrom. As Haman notes, “Presenting new works to an audience is truly exciting. You never know when you might witness an historic event. Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring, Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire—they all had a first performance.”

Salty Cricket: Green Cello @ Rose Wagner Center, 138 W. Broadway, 801-355-2787, Dec. 20, 7:30 p.m., $10-$15. ArtTix.org, SaltyCricket.org
