Hive pass holders can now take unlimited rides on FrontRunner without paying a supplemental fare, a significant increase in value for the $42-per-month transit pass available only to Salt Lake City residents.
Representatives for the Utah Transit Authority and Salt Lake City confirmed the change, which was made in July. Previously, the Hive pass offered unlimited service on Trax and local buses, but only a one-station discount on FrontRunner trips, requiring additional payment to reach destinations like Ogden or Provo.
"We executed a new agreement with UTA in Summer 2023 for the Hive Passes to cover the same services as UTA’s ECO Passes," said Lara McLellan of the city's Transportation Division. "This has allowed us to provide that benefit of unlimited FrontRunner service to our Hive Pass holders at no additional cost to our residents."
The Hive pass is subsidized by the city through a program similar to how large employers or academic institutions can purchase transit passes in bulk for their employees and students. Compared to the UTA passes that can be purchased by an individual, the Hive pass offers city residents a discount, now, of more than $100 per month.
"We’re really excited about this addition and hope that more Salt Lake City residents will be interested in taking advantage of the program," McLellan said.
The change does not apply to the free transit passes available to Salt Lake City School District students, their parents and faculty, which include Trax and local bus services.
