Sure, you could celebrate Independence Day in a big stadium; such events have their undeniable appeal. Then again, there’s also a certain charm to thinking about the origins of our country by returning to a small-town kinda feel.
Tonight, Salt Lake City’s west side hosts the kind of gathering that might take you back to … well, if not 1776, maybe at least 1976. Jordan Park becomes the venue for games for kids of all ages: a cakewalk, a watermelon-eating contest (seedless, one would hope) and plenty of other wholesome entertainment. As evening sets in, the DJ dance party begins, all leading up to a big fireworks-fueled grand finale. Bring your chairs or your blankets, and practice your best “ooohs” and “aaaaahs.” The founding fathers (and mothers) would have wanted it that way.
