Any marriage is a more or less harmonious combination of opposites. A partnership of two artists, as we saw earlier this year with Blue Critchfield and Erica Houston at Art Access, is almost always a study in contrasts. Honeymoon examines that artistic dynamic in the work of painters Kristin Calabrese and Joshua Asher, the former’s figurative painting strongly based on illustration and the latter a playful abstractionist. The Los Angeles-based couple just recently tied the knot and are known internationally for their work.
The Salt Lake Art Center is seeking contributions to augment this exhibit: Through the end of the year, you can send in two of your own digital photographs that demonstrate your definition of “a harmonious marriage of opposites.” The first 100 that the gallery selects will be on display alongside Aster and Calabrese’s work. What happens after the “honeymoon” is anybody’s guess.
