A more aptly named fashion event in Salt Lake City would be hard to come by. Salt Lake Community College Fashion Institute’s Advanced Design students are back again with Raw Couture. Couture, from French, means women’s high-fashion design and dressmaking. Raw, here, presumably means passion—but could, in this context, also mean a young designer’s emerging craft.

Ten students each display five pieces from their collection, crafted this past semester, which run the gamut from swimwear and outerwear to evening wear and bridal. These are potentially America’s—or, at least, the West’s—next generation of fashionistas. They are trained with a keen eye—and to have a keen eye—during the one-year (three-year, beginning fall 2011) program. Los Angeles, Manhattan—who needs ’em?

From inspiration to sketch board to cutting, sewing and finishing, these garments will be modeled by professionals. While all seems elegant and thoughtful out front, all hell may be breaking out backstage. The ultimate orchestra of calamity, a fashion show is remarkable beyond the designs. Maybe that’s why, now in its 11th year, the annual event will almost certainly sell out.

The all-original designs demonstrate the SLCC Fashion Institute’s higher ed cred, while informing the less hip what’s hot, or rather, haute. Spring and summertime fashions abound in a breezy, bright display that will leave husbands and boyfriends guarding their wallets tightly during the reception and designer meet-and-greet that follows the two-hour runway show.

Raw Couture @ Rose Wagner Center, 138 W. Broadway, 801-355-2787, April 16, 7:30 p.m., $10 for students, $19 general. SLCC.edu/Fashion/events.asp, ArtTix.org
