Re: “Bell pulled from witness stand in kidnapping case

I hope you have a doozie of a story next week not to be sitting in on this trial. This is the type of trial the weekly exists to cover. By the way, the defense attorney is Roger Kraft, not Craft.
By the way, I'm admittedly biased.

Re: “Public Enemies

I must take issue with your Mann-without-emotion premise. Granted, I haven't seen Public Enemies yet, and I'll give you that Miami Vice and Collateral weren't terribly thick on the pathos, nor much of anything else for that matter. But Heat, The Insider, Last of the Mohicans and, to a much lesser degree, Ali, were gut-wrenchingly taut films precisely because of seething-below-the-surface emotions. Heat was more a character study than any movie I've seen. There is a certain stoicism to Mann's characters--even more so in Last of the Mohicans--but emotionless? No way. Al Pacino as Lt. Hanna (his last respectable performance as far as I'm concerned) killed as the super-cop who can't keep his family together. Val Kilmer as the fuck-up crook on the outs with his cheating floozy wife, Naomi Judd--both gave me goosebumps in their final scene with her subtly waiving him away from the SWAT team waiting to take him down. Kevin Gage's monologue to the teenage hooker he was about to pulverize. Man, if that shit isn't emotional, you need to look within, because the movie is all heart.

Re: “Bob Bennett: Insurance Industry Shill

You forgot rationing by age (old people get sick too much so taxpayers pay for their socialized care via Medicare), by geography (people in the sticks have fewer or no choices as to insurer and provider), by type of infirmity (people with certain current or past conditions, or who've taken certain prescription medications are deemed uninsurable), by insurance status (people without insurance pay more for procedures than those in insurance pools; in fact, they are deliberately gouged in order to make the providers' group prices appear more attractive), by familial arrangement (the gays and unmarrieds don't get the same spousal inclusion on policies as the straights and matrimonial). I could go on. But the point you were making is that this is a disgusting racket that Bennett et al are bending over backward to preserve. Some aptly call the status quo private system murder by spreadsheet, because something on the order of 20,000 deaths per year in this country are attributed to lack of health insurance for the reasons you and I and others have outlined.
