One-Sided Solutions

Immigration, jailhouse fundraisers & breakfast

This week, you can take part in a uniquely informative, but one-sided, immigration forum, where anti-immigration group leaders and legislator and congressional candidate Rep. Chris Herrod, R-Provo, will discuss the problem of undocumented immigration. This weekend, don’t miss your chance to rock out against the prison industrial complex at a fundraiser concert for the Salt Lake City Prison Divestment Campaign. Later, attend a legislative preview breakfast put on by The United Way, featuring Gov. Gary Herbert.

Illegal Immigration Forum
Thursday, Jan. 12

When a forum has “Real Solutions” written in all caps in the headline for a topic as divisive as immigration, it should be a sign of something not quite right. This forum is a showcase of individuals who all come from a strong border-enforcement-first mentality on immigration, with no panelists advising more moderate positions. Come check it out if for no other reason than to hear what immigration bills Herrod may propose in the next session. Salt Lake City Main Library, 210 E. 400 South, Jan. 12, 7-9 p.m., for more information e-mail

Rock the Jailhouse Fundraiser
Saturday, Jan. 14
If the idea that for-profit prisons make bank off of policies that put more Americans in jail is troubling to you, then come help out the Salt Lake City Prison Divestment Campaign and party for a good cause. A $5 to $15 suggested donation will cover your entry to hear reggae band Know Ur Roots and the rockers of The Socialists. Bring extra cash for food and adult beverages. Centro Civico Mexicano, 155 S. 600 West, Jan. 14, 8 p.m.-12 a.m.,

Legislative Preview Breakfast
Wednesday, Jan. 18

Join the local nonprofit United Way for its legislative-preview breakfast, where speakers like House Speaker Becky Lockhart, R-Provo, and Gov. Gary Herbert will talk about income, education, the 2012 Legislature and more at this forum. The event is free and open to the public, but those interested should RSVP as soon as possible. Grand America Hotel, 555 S. Main, 801-736-7787, Jan. 18, registration 7:30 a.m., breakfast 8-9:30 a.m.,
