It’s conventional wisdom that the number 13 is bad news—unless, of course, you happen to be of that ilk who turn toward the occult for your muse.

Odyssey Dance Theatre just might fit that bill. It’s not that this contemporary dance company is particularly geared toward the dark arts.

Come Halloween time, however, ODT is all things creepy, spooky and macabre—with a bit of cheeky good fun thrown in for good measure.

In fact, 13 has even proven to be a lucky number, in that this is ODT’s 13th turn at producing the annual audience favorite Thriller—a production grown so large that two completely separate touring companies perform nearly the entire month of October in cities spanning the length of Utah.

According to ODT artistic director Derryl Yeager, the trick to keeping the now-teenage Thriller fresh is incorporating new talent and getting the old talent to put on new masks. He also spends months tweaking the show with bits of new material to augment tried-and-true favorites The Curse of the Mummy and the River of Blood Dance. “We will have a new Ghostbusters section with Gev Manoukian,” explains Yeager. “… and a new piece based on the Twilight series called Team Jacob—in this piece we will have Jacob magically transform into a werewolf before your very eyes.”
