Schools, billboards & Holiday Gift Box

It’s a new year, which means you should resolve this week to make your world a better place. Check out a Salt Lake City School District meeting about proposed education legislation for the 2012 Legislature. Or you can take part in a hearing to weigh in on allowing electronic billboards in certain parts of Salt Lake City. Later, help out the Utah Association for Intellectual Disabilities extended holiday-donation drive.

Salt Lake City School Board
Tuesday, Jan. 3

The next legislative session is around the corner, and that means education administrators are hitting the books to get ready for the next session. At this meeting, you can drop in to hear discussions on school-accountability models and a possible look at legislation coming forward that will affect state education. Salt Lake City School District, 440 E. 100 South, 801-578-8599, Jan. 3, 6:30 p.m.,

Salt Lake City Billboard Hearing
Tuesday, Jan. 3

A hearing will be held to see if the city should allow electronic billboards, as long as they are not near residential neighborhoods, and so long as the businesses that want new e-billboards are replacing their traditional billboards with the electronic models instead of adding more signage. The city council wants you to give the thumbs up or down before they decide if these are the signs of the times—and if they should be blinking in the city at all. Salt Lake City & County Building, 451 S. State, 801-535-7600, Jan. 3, 7 p.m.,

Holiday Gift Box
Wednesday, Jan. 4 & Thursday, Jan. 5

The Utah Association for Intellectual Disabilities (UAID) is extending its holiday donation drive to help needy Utahns who have intellectual-development disorders. These folks may be well into their 60s, but mentally, remain as developed as children and eagerly await holiday gifts to brighten their lives. You can donate cash, gifts or time to volunteer for the group’s Holiday Gift Box program—which has been extended into the new year. UAID Office, 1453 S. Major St., 801-870-7011, Jan. 4-5, 11 a.m.-5 p.m.,
