As a complete novice to the world of My Little Pony, I expected little: bright colors, maybe a few cute songs, lots of talk about friendship. I was not expecting one of 2017’s most trenchant political metaphors, however unintended it might be. The world of Equestria is threatened when a unicorn pony with a broken horn named Tempest (Emily Blunt) helps the villainous Storm King (Liev Schreiber) try to steal the magic of the princess ponies, and only Princess Twilight Sparkle (Tara Strong) and her friends can save the day. The ensuing quest narrative is pretty simple stuff, though it offers its strong supporting cast—also including Taye Diggs and Kristen Chenoweth—a chance to dive into energetic musical numbers. But the plot comes down to a weirdly timely cautionary tale: This is a movie about what happens when you help a cruel idiot gain immense power, just because you think he can get you what you want. It’s an amusing enough adventure for the kids; there’s that little something extra for the actual grown-ups in the audience.
