You’ve been looking for a new way to commemorate the bravery of those who took all their possessions in handcarts and made their way hundred of miles to their new Deseret.

So, of course, your thoughts immediately run to … motorcycles! There will be events all over the state today, but think about what it means to have gone from handcarts to motocross in 160 years. Today marks the second annual Pioneer Day event at Rocky Mountain Raceway, and it’s event No. 9 in the Plaza Cycle Motocross series. Riders in all classes begin practice at 1 p.m., with racing beginning at 4 p.m. for year-end championships.

And when the roaring, flying action has finally drawn to a close, you can sit back and enjoy the track’s fireworks display. It’s exactly what your ancestors came all this way to allow you to do … more or less.

MX Pioneer Days Extravaganza @ Rocky Mountain Raceway, 6555 W. 2100 South, West Valley, 801-252-9557, Friday, July 24, gates open at 11 a.m., races 4 p.m. RMRRacing.com
