THURSDAY 8/11
nnRUSHMORE RECORDS TOUR
nnBy the time this is published, Steve Weir will have either A. won the lottery, B. experienced the generosity of friends, or C. realized the judge was serious about throwing him in jail for not paying a $239 speeding ticket. Day at the Fair’s deviant drummer is obviously not on a major label, or that fine would be paid by now. Of course, there are benefits to indie-label status, mainly the constant fuzzy feeling of not selling out. DATF, along with The Suicide Pact, Madison and The Mile After, are currently representing their DIY label'Rushmore Records, a subsidiary of Drive-Thru Records'on a tour that proves power-pop-punk is not ready to die. Not yet, anyway. Lo-Fi Café, 127 S. West Temple, 7 p.m. All-ages. Tickets: 24Tix.com.
nnSAM BUSH
nnNot a supporter of George W? Don’t let that stop you from digging on other Bushes, especially when a world-class mandolinist is involved. Without Sam Bush, we might have missed out on the New Grass Revival, a movement on par with jazz-world fusion. By mutating traditional sounds into wholly new and exciting forms, Bush helped expand bluegrass’ appeal while also retaining diehard fans of fiddles, hollowed-out acoustic guitars and extended jam sessions. While it’s been five years since he released new material, his SLC fan base remains insanely rabid. Watch out for flying Birkenstocks. Suede, 1612 Ute Blvd. (Kimball Junction), Park City, 9 p.m. Tickets: 800-888-8499, SmithsTix.com.
nnAlso Thursday: David Grisman, Old School Freight Train (Gallivan Center); Neva Dinova, Mayday (Kilby Court); Hank Williams III (Sound); Lifehouse (In the Venue)
nnFRIDAY 8/12
nnTHE HEATERS, THE HOTNESS
nnWhile January might have been a more fitting month to unleash The Heaters and The Hotness, combining the two local groups under one roof makes for one hell of a lineup. Not warm to the idea of risking your precious Friday-night festivities on relative unknowns? Give me a break. Anyone with a pair of dancing shoes can get down to ’60s-era-inspired rock or post-punk beats like Duran Duran and David Lee Roth in a blender. Kilby Court, 741 S. 330 West, 7:30 p.m. All-ages. Info: 320-9887, KilbyCourt.com (with The Invisible Rays)
nnAlso Friday: The Hurt Process (Lo-Fi Cafe); K Liner (Sugarbeats); Wendy Colanna (Sun & Moon Café); SLUG Localized (Urban Lounge); Starmy, Red Bennies (Burt’s Tiki Lounge); Spork, Rotten Musicians (Monk’s); The Claustrophobics (Todd’s Bar & Grill)
nnSATURDAY 8/13
nnSWEET SUNNY SOUTH
nnAfter spending the day getting sloshed on homegrown suds, try sobering up enough to enjoy the sounds of Sweet Sunny South, a Colorado-based bluegrass band with original takes on traditional standards. Bill Powers, Cory Obert, Rob Miller and Shelley Gray drove down here to play not one, but three kick-ass shows starting with an exclusive Outdoor Retailers’ performance, followed by an all-access gig for the Gallivan Center’s annual Folk & Bluegrass Festival, and winding down with an intimate appearance at the Sun & Moon Café'the smoked pulled pork on ciabatta goes great with acoustic fiddles. Gallivan Center, 239 S. Main, 6:30 p.m.; Sun & Moon Café, 5205 Emigration Canyon, 9 p.m. Info: SweetSunnySouth.com.
nnTHE THIEVES
nnThey really could have settled on a less widely used name. The Thieves, if Googled properly, leads to a dazzling array of musicians, D&D fans and actual burglars completely unrelated to the up-and-coming UK band. They could have also unfurled a less common sound, but in all truth you should thank them for contributing to an extended celebration of retro rock. The group’s latest release, Tales from the White Line, brings to mind sweet memories of The Darkness and Justin Hawkins’ jumpsuit. It’s all very flashy and exaggerated, but damn if it doesn’t melt in your mouth! Burt’s Tiki Lounge, 726 S. State, 10 p.m. Info: 521-0572 (with J.W. Blackout)
nnAlso Saturday: Breaking Benjamin (In the Venue); The Havoc (Lo-Fi Café); Sybris (Kilby Court); No-Fi Soul Rebellion (Urban Lounge); Cowboy Mouth (Velvet Room); Who Da Funk: Jorge Jaramillo (Vortex); 112 (Teazers, Ogden)
nnSUNDAY 8/14
nnSteve Earle, Allison Moorer (Red Butte Garden); Built Like Alaska (Kilby Court); Zombie Fest (Lo-Fi Café); Hockey Night (Monk’s)
nn
MONDAY 8/15
nnParty Line, Chubby Bunny (Kilby Court); Spin Doctors (Suede)
nnTUESDAY 8/16
nnLOS LONELY BOYS
nnSince Ozzfest boned out (“scheduling conflict,” yeah, right), you have no reason to skip Los Lonely Boys. You might recall their catchy ditty, “Heaven,” which flew straight off the Adult Contemporary singles chart into a theater near you for a good four months. Remember? How it stuck in your head for days? Weeks?! Well, don’t fault them for turning a family tradition (tres hermanos Garza), into a smashing success. The West Texas-based musicians draw on a number of sources to produce a unique Tejano-style sound to which the Beatles might groove. Take that Ozzy! Deer Valley Resort, Park City, 6:30 p.m. All-ages. Tickets: 800-888-8499, SmithsTix.com (with Robert Randolph & the Family Band).
nnPEELANDER Z
nnSo this trio lands arrives from outer space, claims to be from this unknown planet but sounds eerily similar to Japanese rock bands with their frantic guitar riffs, erratic screaming and throw-blows drumming. “No, we swear,” they say. “We are from PeeLander, and thus go by the name PeeLander Z!” Right. Well, hometown’s existence notwithstanding, these kids have amassed a wealth of ear candy. Their third full-length, Dance Friendly, is catchier than Richard Simmons in a mosh pit. Team PeeLander are driven by fashionistas and artistas with a penchant for comic books and kung fu, so expect plenty of eye candy to accompany the rock. Burt’s Tiki Lounge, 726 S. State, 10 p.m. Info: 521-0572 (with Thunderfist and Die Monster Die).
nnAlso Tuesday: Los Lonely Boys (Deer Valley Resort); SuperSoFar, Broke (Tuesday Tunes at Trolley Square); Pelican, Red Sparrows (In the Venue); Pattern Is Movement (Urban Lounge); Tinsley Ellis (Brewskis, Ogden)
