BEACH HOUSE, PAPERCUTS
Baltimore’s Beach House represents a slightly different side of the gritty harbor town depicted in HBO’s The Wire. Instead of ruthless drug lords, corrupt politician and crumbling schools, the ethereal duo conjures a world of witches, bottomless wells and magical spells—the stuff of haunting, romantic, escapist dreams. On a typical track (see releases circa 2006 and 2008), Victoria Legrand’s blue-velvet vocals glide in slow motion across shuddering keys and strings, expressing more in a single drawn-out note than in her poetic phrasing—by the time she’s made her point, you’ve blissfully zoned out, transported to another dimension. Sound deep? Wait till you get a load of San Francisco’s Papercuts, an equally romantic, if more upbeat, group whose material swerves into psychedelic garage-rock territory (“John Brown”) before circling back for a pop break. THELONIOUS MONK INSTITUTE OF JAZZ
Who says the Department of Alcohol and Beverage Control isn’t hip? Get this: when officials from New Orleans-based Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz planned to take its Peer-to-Peer jazz education program through Utah, they contacted the head of DABC to see if they couldn’t finagle a closing-night gig at Ogden’s Wine Cellar (which is, of course, a private club for members 21 and over). Now, mind you, this was the first time the Institute had run into any kind of road block. Formed in response to recent nationwide cuts in public-school budgets (which nix extracurricular activities, including P.E. and music classes), the nonprofit organization launched hands-on, college-level training to kids across the country. This week, six particularly gifted jazz students from Chicago’s Gallery 37 Center for the Arts will join saxophonist Antonio Hart and vocalist Lisa Henry for a weeklong workshop culminating in a performance tonight for the general public. Thanks to the DABC’s rare display of generosity, this concert will take place at the Wine Cellar, with the underage musicians playing upstairs in a temporarily alcohol-free zone. Apparently, the DABC head is a huge jazz fan. Take advantage of this rare break in form and marvel at the mad skills of artists following in Monk’s footsteps.
