Velour is such a valued institution, it seems the Provo all-ages venue should be celebrating its 20th, not its second anniversary. Initially lauded for simply filling a gaping void in the town’s quiet nightlife, the now-popular club is gaining a solid reputation for not just hosting but also encouraging up-and-coming artists including Seve vs. Evan, Joshua James, Band of Annuals, Palomino and other names that should be on your personal MP3 player. If you’re a bit older and intimidated by hip young things, go see Juno for a loose primer on some new vernacular. Whatever you do, don’t miss tonight’s (Allred, Cary Judd, Maple Grove, Chris Merritt) and tomorrow night’s (Neon Trees, A Film in the Ballroom, The John Whites, Elizabethan Report) celebratory performances. Get ready Utah—City Weekly’s SLAMMys are back—and, hopefully, better than ever. This year brings several changes to our annual local issue, including a departure from the traditional Showdown to South by Southwest format in which bands duked it out for a chance to perform in Austin, Texas. SXSW no longer offered us the stage, and their loss is Salt Lake City’s gain: We decided to improve the event by making it less of a competition and more of showcase, with nominated (that’s right, nominated) bands chosen to represent Salt Lake City’s diverse music scene. Readers are encouraged to attend as many showcases as possible to both support their favorite acts and gain exposure to groups not currently on their radar. You can cast your vote (including write-in entries) online at SLWeekly.com and/or at the clubs. Winners will receive prizes and will be announced in the Feb. 14 issue so now you have something to look forward to besides Valentine’s Day. Much more fulfilling. LOOM & PRIZE COUNTRY SPLIT CD RELEASE
It’s exciting when local bands stay together long enough to release new material, especially when the artists are young, talented and full of promise. Sure, the debut album was good—but imagine what might follow after a few more jam sessions and shows. Maybe they even weathered the road with an out-of-state act as Salt Lake City’s Loom did with Portland’s Prize Country. The Utah-based, violin-fueled post-punk quintet got along famously with the Northwestern master blasters, so much so, the two up-and-comers recorded a split-inch together. Clutches features new tracks by both bands tucked inside a colorful vinyl record with a limited pressing of 500 sold only at tonight’s show. So get down there, already. And pray they stay together. You might have noticed that Park City’s Suede shut its doors a while back and thought, “Huh. Must be closed for remodeling. Can’t wait for it to reopen.” Well, bad news is the popular venue is gone for good. Good news is the folks responsible for booking Suede’s killer shows have relocated their business to Salt Lake City in the form of the Paladium (not to be confused with the Los Angeles venue whose name has two Ls and pretentious crowds).
