Homegrown international sensation Ririe- Woodbury Dance Company, with a nearly half-century of history, is not necessarily unique when it comes to the sheer amount of talent that has churned through its ranks. But Momentum, the annual show produced by RWDC alumni, has earned a reputation as a performance of the highest caliber, a modern dance event not to be missed.
Presented for the fourth consecutive year, Momentum 2010 will pull together several familiar faces from its history (co-producers Juan Carlos Claudio and Jill Voorhees Edwards, Cain Keenan and Jillian Harris) and pair them with new friends and RWDC alumni (Karin Fenn, Jill Hinrichs-Patterson and Stevan Novakovich). It will also bring together a unique group of professional dancers culled from the current rosters of RWDC, Repertory Dance Theatre and Raw Moves, including a few younger faces eager to make their mark.
While Harris will be creating a new work upon arrival in Salt Lake City, Jill Voorhees Edwards (pictured) turned toward the landscape itself for choreographic inspiration to create her work, The Edge of Red. Other scheduled works include Novakovich’s Solo Trilogy and Claudio’s MOTMOT, designed as a tribute to Pina Baush (1940- 2009), Tandy Beal, Margie Gillis and Carolyn Carlson, a quartet he picked because, “Seeing them move is like seeing the essence of things, like seeing nature at its best. There is no pretentious movement; they live in the condition of the spontaneous experience of their bodies. They experience movement as part of life and life as a moving entity.”
