If you want to know the up-and-coming local artistic styles, you could do a lot worse than the University of Utah’s MFA Candidates in Studio Art show. Each spring, it showcases the work of those who have worked their way through the rigors of the college’s program, which has long stressed classical composition and drafting skills as fundamentals to creating individual artistic expressions.
Among the baker’s dozen
artists on display, one of the most remarkable is Tom Betts, whose
hyper-real teacup paintings evoke a moment in time, a pause to consider
not just the object but the exercise of making art itself. Michelle
Kurtz is a master of portraiture who has also dabbled in experimental
stick figures, displaying a stylistic versatility not always favored by
instructors. Kirsti Ringger’s sculptures embody art history in their
shapes that work on the auditory as well as visual senses. And, not to
disregard the latest technology, Van Chu’s digital lenswork
“Photographic Brushstroke” is also on display at the Salt Lake City Main
Library.
