Mama out, Meditrina in: Mama’s Southern Plantation across from Covey Field on West Temple has closed. That’s the bad news. The good news is that in Mama’s place Meditrina Small Plates & Wine Bar restaurant has opened. Meditrina serves lunch and dinner and offers an eclectic range of cuisine—everything from chicken satay and a steak sandwich to steamed shellfish, hummus, lollipop lamb chops and crab cakes. There’s also wine and beer available. Meditrina is located at 1394 S. West Temple. For reservations, phone 801-485-2055. 

Feeling frisky? Perusing the menu at Tokai Sushi 4U, I did a double-take when I came across a maki roll with an uncommon name. I’m accustomed to rolls with names like caterpillar, spider, rainbow, Philly and Playboy. But this is the first I’ve ever heard of a Viagra roll! I suppose it would go nicely with the Love roll or maybe the Dynamite, which are also available at Tokai. In addition to rolls, Tokai Sushi 4U serves Bento boxes, sashimi, teriyaki dishes, undon, katsu, tempura, wine and beer. I didn’t see oysters on the menu though—the ultimate culinary aphrodisiac. Tokai Sushi 4U is at 1301 E. Miller Ave. (3130 South) in Salt Lake City, and its phone is 466-3311.

During a recent Delta Airlines flight to the East Coast, I was happily surprised to be fed by celebrity chef, restaurateur and author Todd English. Well, he didn’t feed me exactly. But Delta’s food-for-purchase Eats menu features select entrees and snacks developed for high-altitude service by English, including a simple but mighty tasty hummus plate served with olive tapenade, veggies and pita chips.
