Dear City Guide Reader:

Much has changed in the past 12 months. You’ll certainly need this 2011 guide to make sure you’re enjoying all the best our capital city has to offer in the coming year.

As we all continue to persevere through difficult economic times, many signs are pointing to better days ahead. Unprecedented investment in our city has not only fundamentally enhanced an already-vibrant core but also drawn dozens of new ventures to downtown and surrounding areas. Salt Lake City’s one-of-a-kind combination of metropolitan energy, cultural activities and world-class, accessible recreational opportunities has kept us in the forefront of any conversation about the best places to live in the West.

Salt Lake City’s international reputation for the arts will get a boost from a just-completed landmark agreement between Salt Lake City and County to ensure a powerful and ongoing effort to market our cultural core. Great things are in store for the home of Ballet West, the Utah Symphony and Opera, Capitol Theatre, Abravanel Hall and the Rose Wagner Center for the Performing Arts. While these Salt Lake City mainstays continue to anchor our arts community, we’ll continue to explore expanding our cultural offerings with a performing-arts center and a home for the new Utah Film and Media Arts Coalition.

Here at City Hall, we’ve continued to reflect the priorities of our residents and have completed an exhaustive evaluation of municipal code, moving forward with an essential update. Proposed changes will create new opportunities to advance our sustainability goals—urban agriculture, alternative energy, walkability and transit-oriented development are integral to our plans as the city continues to grow and prosper. The diversity and vitality of our unique neighborhoods reflect our strength and character as a great American city; new transit and development projects will keep our communities vital.

Use this City Weekly guide to explore our city, and experience what the national media continues to tout: Salt Lake City is an emerging regional leader as the best place to start a business, raise a family, celebrate the arts, live sustainably and enjoy all that our nearby canyons and mountain ranges have to offer!

Best wishes,
Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker
