’Tis the season to remember Martin Luther King Jr., the father of the civil rights movement in the 1960s. In 2010, why not remember the legacy of King through study and service? Start with an MLK symposium at Utah Valley University, which includes a keynote address by Linda Brown, the plaintiff in the seminal segregation case of Brown vs. Board of Education. Then, learn how to fight the power at a citizen lobbying training. Finally, honor King´s memory by spending the holiday helping others.

Utah Valley University’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial
Thursday, Jan. 14-Friday Jan. 15
UVU is packing another major card for debate and discussion on the legacy of civil rights in the nation. The forum kicks off with a keynote by Linda Brown, who made history as a third-grader. At the time, her disparate treatment by the Topeka, Kan., school system resulted in a court case that rocked the nation. The conference will feature numerous other readings and panel discussions on civil rights, race and the legacy of King.

City Weekly Citizen Lobbying event
Friday, Jan. 15
Join Rep. Rebecca Chavez-Houck, D-Salt Lake City, and HEAL Utah’s Eric Spreng for tips about lobbying legislators during the upcoming session, which begins Jan. 25. Remember who elected your elected officials: the people; so don’t sit silently on the sidelines this year. This is also advertised as a “drinking session,” which should help fuel that activist mojo.

MLK Day of Service and March

Westminster College’s Diversity and International Center and Center for Civic Engagement have been collecting donations for Utah’s refugee community. Bring donations if you have them, especially first-aid items like Band-Aids, vitamins, hand sanitizer, etc. You can also help out by sorting donations, and participate in the Martin Luther King Day march.
