Maria Bamford

For everyone who has ever laughed at a sick joke while gasping and saying, “That’s terrible,” Maria Bamford is the answer to your twisted prayers. Her mousy voice and angelic face only briefly mask the sheer insanity lying just below the surface. As soon as she goes into her first joke, it becomes glaringly apparent that Bamford suffers from some serious instability, as her face contorts and her voice pops back and forth to the various wacko personalities within.

Whether she’s joking about the deeply private stories of her own battles with mental illness or shooting off random comments about life in general that no respectable woman would say in public, Bamford’s lack of any sense of moral uprightness is what makes her so irresistibly funny. To truly experience her mad genius, you need only to go to YouTube and watch her web TV series, The Maria Bamford Show. Whatever your poison, Bamford knows how to bring out the sicko in us all.

Maria Bamford @ Wiseguys Trolley Square, 505 S. 600 East, 801-532- 5233, Aug. 20-21, 7:30 & 10 p.m., $20.
