Live Green SLC! Festival

Some folks are double top-secret, code-red vegans; others buy organic when they can. Some make clothes from bark and leaves; others wear organic cotton, sometimes. Whatever the case, we’re all consumers—yeah, I said the “C” word—and everyone could stand to do a little better by the Earth. That’s Live Green SLC!’s mantra, more or less.

Now, thanks to a partnership between the Downtown Alliance and the ReDirect Guide, the festival is able to focus on even more sustainable options, like everyday or big, one-time purchases. That’s important because, as some economic environmentalists say, consumers vote with their dollars, thus supporting companies that might, or might not, be sustainably oriented. This event’s also for learning and teaching everything from farm practices to lowering emissions. However, no one has to change their lifestyles, and if folks do nothing with the information presented, there’s no judgment, says co-producer Mike Johnson. They’re all about solutions and fun.

Beyond exhibitors, the festival will have an Eco Fashion Show, with local The Green Element and others. There’ll be a post-Sundance premiere of the documentary Waste Land at 4 p.m., along with music performances all day by the Daniel Day Trio and others. Also, the solar beer garden, with sun ray-powered coolers, will be pumping out Squatters brews.

Johnson sums up the importance of the seventh-annual festival with this: “As ... people go further with our current lifestyles, the message [of more sustainable choices] is more pivotal than ever. If we can do our best to make the right consumer choices and create sustainable jobs, then we’ll be on the right track.”
