Liliana Matasa: Time Without Borders

Romanian-born artist Liliana Matasa has been one of the stalwarts of the Contemporary Design & Art Gallery, which has specialized in showing the work of Eastern European artists—especially artists from that region who have immigrated to Utah. Matasa’s mixed-media collages (“Muy Dentro Tuyo” is pictured) represent a surrealism that is distinct from the abstraction or social realism familiar to students of Eastern European art, although surrealism has also been a well-traveled terrain for artists depicting the sometimes dream-like course the region’s history has followed.
The pieces in this show are two series of collages in 2-D and 3-D from 2002-03 that have never been shown before, and a stream-of-consciousness look that she’s moved beyond in her newer work. Matasa’s works are accompanied in the show by modern realist works by McGarren Flack, Hal Hogan’s expressionism, paintings on silk by Elise Wilding, Aldona Mitsulyavichute’s symbolic criticism, and Michelle Condrat’s contemporary impressionism.
