The safflower plant has been used for many and many years for bringing relief to health disorders. Nowadays, although many specialists are aware of the high potential that this plant has, due to lack of information regarding it and the lack of biological material with which to start a cultivating it, the interest shown in the safflower plant is quite small. Generally speaking, safflower is cultivated for its eatable oil that is obtained from the achenes. This oil is believed to have a high content of unsaturated fatty acids in comparison with other vegetal oils. It has a very low burning point than the sunflower oil has. Safflower oil reduces the cholesterol levels within the human body, and that is why many alternative medicine experts recommend it as a suitable therapy method. Safflower is part of a controversy surrounding the bad or good effects that oleaginous plants have on the human body’s health. What are oleaginous plants? Oleaginous plants are those types of plants that displays seeds filled with high amounts of liquid fats, currently named oils, which can be easily extracted through modern methods. The accumulation of substantial fat quantities, like spare substances, can be carried out in different organs of the plant, apart from seeds and fruits, and so we can mention the rizozom, germ, filaments, etc. From the oleaginous plant's category, there are several types of plants which are part of it, such as sunflower, castor oil plant, flax oil plant, cotton, soy, nuts, opium poppy, mustard, cole, sesame, safflower and so on and so forth. The oleaginous plants’ classification The plants from which oil can be extracted are grouped into two broad categories: 1. The typical oily power stations, used only for this purpose, such as castor-oil plant, olive, sesame, nuts; 2. The plants used for mixed uses: cotton, flax (also used for making certain textile fibers); pumpkin (the pulp for feeding animals, and the seeds for extracting oil), cereals ( as food and as an essential oil source). How can one use oleaginous plants? As you might have already guessed from the name itself, oleaginous plants represent an important source for producing vegetal oils. These oils can be successfully included in any man’s diet because they have a good taste and a high digestibility rate, circa 95%, surpassing many fats coming from animal sources. A significant disadvantage of these vegetal oils deals with the fact that during the industrial processing, a considerable part of the vitamins contained is lost, like vitamin A, D, E and K. Vegetal oils are widely used in the cans’ industry and bread manufacturer. Through the process of hydrogenation, the margarine is obtained, which is used as such in diets or as an ingredient in various pastry recipes. Vegetal oils seem to be more and more popular within various menus lately. Although it may sound like a paradox, vegetal oils, hence the safflower one, can bring multiple benefits to one’s health. Vegetal oils were far long ago popular as for their health benefits Vegetal oils have been studied for many years now, and their benefits cannot be overlooked. In comparison with the oils coming from animal sources, the vegetal ones are believed to consist of precious nutrients, vitamins and unsaturated fatty acids which are essential for a proper functioning of the human body. In fact, vegetal fats have been proved to have a considerable effect on preventing atherosclerosis, and this was first discovered centuries ago. Some authors have associated lipids with unsaturated fatty acids content ( oleic, linoleic acids) with essential lipids, the term under which these enzymes are also known in the present days. Therefore, the health benefits of vegetal oils, hence the safflower oils’, brought forward are undeniable. The importance of safflower oil After the progresses achieved by the genetics and technologies dealing with the safflower development, the oil content has increased from a rate between 25 and 35%, similar to what was registered in the period between 1950 and 1960, up to 40 or 45% at safflower types cultivated nowadays, reaching the oil content that sunflowers display. Due to its high amounts of unsaturated fatty acids, using safflower oil within diets does not lead to the increment of cholesterol levels within the blood. In this way, the risks of getting certain cardiovascular disorders are avoided, such as coronary or arterial disturbances. How can you use safflower oil? Safflower oil is quite popular for its high amounts of linoleic acid, 76,4%, the iodine rate with a limit between 140 and 152%, the saponification index between 186 and 193%, the acidity index between 0,3 and 3%. Some authors state that although safflower oil has a twice less stronger oil drying agent than flax oil has, the first one can still be used for making boiled oil, linoleums or waxed paper. Other experts believe that safflower oil, due to its content, can successfully be used in making high-quality film layers, which can keep a long-term transparency and do not get scratched. Others believe that safflower oil can have usages widely in the pharmaceutical field, due to its purgative and anti-rheumatic effects. Moreover, safflower’s flowers have a strong calming effect when it comes to severe cough crisis. How come an oil can be healthy for you? There is an entire controversy surrounding the real effects that oils can have on one’s health. The same goes for the safflower oil, which seems to be more and more used by many people, hence women, who wish to lose some extra weight. Of course, to achieve the best results, with no side effects, everybody considering safflower oil as a help for melting extra pounds, should be fully aware of the quantities consumed. No excess or exaggeration will bring good results, these will only worsen your condition, and you most probably end up with other health disorders.
